Worldwide, rats and mice spread over 35 diseases. These diseases can be spread to humans directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine, or saliva, or through rodent bites. Diseases carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent.
Mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a nickel, and rats can squeeze
through a hole the size of a half dollar. It is important to inspect for
rodent droppings, especially in undisturbed areas such as pantries, under
baseboards, in attics and along walls.
Rodent droppings can cause allergic reactions, but disease, including the potentially deadly Hantavirus. More frequently, though, rodents can carry bacteria such as salmonella, on their bodies and contaminate food sources, kitchen surfaces and equipment.
There are about 3,500 cockroach species world-wide, about 70 of which are found in the United States. The kinds of cockroaches most commonly found in and around Florida homes are the Florida Woods Roach, American, smokybrown, Australian, German and Asian.
Cockroaches are known to increase severity of asthma symptoms for people with allergy sensitivities.
Cockroaches can carry bacteria such as E coli and salmonella on their bodies, which can contaminate food, cooking equipment and food surfaces.
There are currently 80 species of mosquitoes identified in Florida, more than any other state. Of these, 33 species can cause health problems. Thirteen species are capable of transmitting diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis and encephalitis [St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), Western Equine encephalitis (WEE), LaCrosse encephalitis (LAC), Japanese encephalitis (JE), Eastern Equine encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile virus (WNV)] to humans and animals.
Avoiding mosquito nesting/breeding sites and eliminating standing water in or around the home is important to protect your health.
Without a natural enemy, fire ants have spread rapidly through the United States. Fire ants are known for being aggressive, swarming over anything that disturbs their nest, including pets and people. Their painful stings affect about 40% of people in infested areas each year. Twenty million people a year are stung by fireants in the United States!
Florida fire ants prefer land that is open and exposed to the sun. They live in colonies composed of numerous dome-shaped mounds measuring between ten and 24 inches long and six to eight inches high. The number of Florida fire ants in a colony can surpass 250,000.
Two most common species to Florida are Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis Invicta) and Native Fire Ant Solenopsis Geminata.
Bedbugs do not cause disease and live solely on blood. Having bedbugs is not a sign of a filthy environment; immaculate homes can have an infestation as well.
Bedbugs can enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bedbugs tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.
The two most common types of termites in Florida are drywood termites, which infest wood and subterranean termites, which nest in soil.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars in structural damage may be going on behind walls, in attics and other parts of the home without anyone noticing until it’s too late.
Drywood termites live deep inside wood and are seldom seen. Subterranean termites tend to infest wood that is wet from leaking pipes or areas surrounding plumbing. They generally swarm in Spring and Summer, especially after a rainstorm.
